It is that time of the year again, Christmas has passed and everyone welcomes the new year. With that comes the new wave of new year resolutions and promises. One of the most popular new year resolutions is to be fit and regularly go to the gym. We all know how that turns out. The majority of people tend to break this resolution within a month or two and the dream of getting fit remains a dream.
The main issue lies in not being able to consistently incorporate fitness and exercise into your daily routine. People often get ahead of themselves and set unrealistic goals that are sure to fail.
But if you are fixed on sticking by your fitness resolution, then here are some tips that will help you for the new year:
1. SET REALISTIC GOALS
One of the main factors that cause people to give up their resolutions is having unrealistic goals in the first place. There is no shame in starting small. After all, all journeys start with a single step. Having goals that seem difficult and too good to be true can have a strong start, but often leads people to give up quite soon. For example, having a goal of getting 6 pack abs when you don’t exercise much in the first place is a classic example of having an unrealistic resolution. Rather than that, start by simply aiming to increase the amount of exercise you get each day.
2. PLAN YOUR GOAL
Unable to complete or follow through with your resolution also stems from poor planning. Sudden change in your lifestyle can be uplifting at first but in the long run, can become unsustainable.
Plan out your resolution for the long term. By doing so, you won’t face the whiplash of a sudden change and will be able to make the most out of your fitness and exercise routines. Making a time-table for each day and allotting times for exercises and other activities while sticking to the routine is a great way to plan in detail your fitness resolution.
3. START JOGGING
This is one of the most common fitness resolutions you can have. This is because it is a simple yet extremely beneficial resolution that can be easily incorporated into your daily life. Given the benefits of jogging, your daily life can see a significant improvement and you will be able to keep your resolution. By making a small change in your life, you will be able to get fit and have a greater sense of accomplishment.
4. HAVE A MOTIVATOR
Many resolutions remain unfulfilled due to lack or loss of motivation. So having someone or something that will help you stay on track is a great way to keep pursuing your fitness goal. This can be in the form of a friend who will help you stay on your goal or as a penalty for missing days of exercise. Having a punishment-reward system is a great way to motivate yourself into your exercises. You can also start exercising with a friend who has the same fitness goal. This will help you to be more productive and competitive in a healthy way. Training and exercising with a friend will allow you to stick to your regime and occasionally edge you to go even beyond.
5. KNOW WHAT YOU NEED
When setting your fitness resolution for the new year, you should have a clear understanding of what the goal is and what achieving that goal will entail. Knowing all the things you need for your training for the coming year will help you be more focused and invested. For home gyms, you will need weights and bars along with other equipment to help you in your training.
6. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
As you start off with your training, it is advised to keep a track of your progress. By making short-term goals and mini-milestones, it becomes easier to achieve targets and you will also get a sense of fulfillment. Many fitness equipments like the UrbanTrek TD-N1 have built-in trackers that record and show the amount of progress you have made. Tracking your progress is also a great motivator that encourages you to push past your limits and makes you feel good about making exercises and fitness a part of your daily life.
7. HAVE COMPLIMENTARY GOALS
You can always have more than one resolution alongside fitness and training. If so, then having different resolutions that complement each other will greatly boost your morale and the probability of you achieving all of them. Having additional goals like drinking more water, or eating healthy, or even simply putting down your phone and spending more time with friends and family is a sure-fire way of improving your life. Complimentary goals help increase the overall benefit of the main goal. Not to mention the feeling of accomplishing multiple goals is exhilarating and builds confidence.
Starting a new year with the aim of improving your mental and physical health can be life-altering. The benefits of fitness are a gift that can be seen even long in the future and can directly affect your quality of life. So put on those running shoes and set your alarm and stride head first towards the new and improved you this new year.
